The listed museum building was built according to plans by the famous architect Erich Mendelsohn and opened on 15 May 1930 as the Schocken department stores'. On 15 May 2014 - exactly 84 years after its opening as a department store - the building welcomed its first "customers" in its new function: as the headquarters of the State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz, in short smac.
