The Belgian Henry van de Velde is considered one of the most versatile artists of Art Nouveau.

Herbert Eugen Esche, a stocking manufacturer from Chemnitz, was so impressed by van de Velde's sense of design that he commissioned his first architectural work in Germany in 1902: the construction of a prestigious villa.
From the garden fence to the curtains, the overall work of art bears the signature of the Belgian architect. The Villa Esche is considered an architectural monument of European rank and is one of the highlights on the European Henry van de Velde Route. Today, the villa is home to the Henry van de Velde Museum, where you should especially take a look at the largely original furnished former dining room and the music salon.
Through the friendship between the entrepreneur and the artist, Henry van de Velde was given further commissions in Chemnitz, such as the Villa Koerner and the Villa Quisisana.
